This page is a 'work in progress' and can change at any time :)

Purpose: Christian Eschatology is the study of study of the destiny of man as it is revealed in the Bible.  Why is this a relevant subject of research?  Because Jesus himself taught about it!  The 'Olivet Discourse' took place on the Mount of Olives and is covered in the synoptic Gospels (Matthew 24 / Mark 13 / Luke 21). That should be sufficient reason on its own, but the Bible also contains numerous other passages on the same topic -- including the most eschatolological book of all: Relevation.  If it wasn't important for us to know, Jesus would not have mentioned it.  So does Daniel, Ezekiel, Joel, Paul, and John!

Background: Up to 2012 and (almost) my 50th year, I have always accepted the most widely held evangelical understandings of the biblical book of Revelation i.e. a futurist literal fulfillment of the 'End Times', including the predominant 'Pre Tribulation' timing of the 'Rapture'.

Present: As I set out for a 'big picture' understanding of the chronology involved, I was challenged with the newer (in name, but not in concept) theory of 'Pre Wrath Rapture'.  Although this interpretation is not without its own issues, I am now seeing it as 'fitting the facts' better than what I understood to this point.  With the disclaimer that I don't (yet?) fully endorse any particular person or group on this perspective, credit goes to the following:

End Times Chronology: Second Coming / Rapture Core Events

The initial step was to collect the key non-Revelation Bibical passages that clearly reference 'End Times' events in order to construct a basic chronology of events, in a straight-forward manner that makes sense.  The following major events were apparent:
Using the analogy of a simple 50-piece jigsaw puzzle (the key Biblical passages involved), with some of the pieces already attached to each other (linear verses in chronological order already), it is a fairly simple task to assemble a recognizable picture (simple chronology of End Times events).  I challenge anyone else who is interested to try the same thing with the verses listed below, to see if they end up with the same (or similar) result!

When this simple partial chronology is overlaid on the book of Revelation, the most reasonable position is apparently surrounding the '5th Seal' and '6th Seal' openings, as shown below:

Isaiah 13:9

See, the day of the LORD is coming —a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger— to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.

Isaiah 24:18-20

Isaiah 24:21

In that day the Lord will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below.

Daniel 9:27

He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’
In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him...

Joel 2:32

And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved;
Joel 2:31

...before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

Matthew 24:9-12,15-16,21

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold...
“So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains...For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.

Matthew 24:31

And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call,
Matthew 24:31

and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Matthew 24:31

and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

Mark 13:14,19-20

When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong...
those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.

Luke 21:25-26

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Luke 21:27

At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Luke 21:28

When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

John 5:28-29

Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice
and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

Acts 2:21

1 Corinthians 15:52

...at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound...

1 Corinthians 15:22-23,51-52

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him...
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, ...the dead will be raised imperishable...
1 Corinthians 15:51-52

...we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye...and we will be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4:15-16

According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming [parousia] of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command,
1 Thessalonians 4:16

with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God,
1 Thessalonians 4:16

and the dead in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians 4:17

After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
1 Thessalonians 5:1-4

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.

2 Thessalonians 1:7,10

This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels... on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

2 Thessalonians 1:7

...and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well.

2 Thessalonians 1:6,8-9

God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you...He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might

2 Thessalonions 2:2-4

...Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

2 Thessalonions 2:1

Concerning the coming [parousia] of our Lord Jesus Christ...

2 Thessalonions 2:1

...and our being gathered [episynagoge] to him

Relevation 6:9-11

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.  They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?”  Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, were killed just as they had been.
Revelation 6:12

I watched as he opened the sixth seal.
Revelation 6:12-14

There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red,  and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.  The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
Revelation 6:15-16

Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.  They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!

Revelation 7:9,13-14

[back reference]

After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands... Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?” I answered, “Sir, you know.”   And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Revelation 6:17

For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

NOTE: The 'Second Coming of Christ' is an event that spans some amount of time (months?  years?) and involves different phases:
  1. His dramatic and glorious appearance to all living humanity 'in the clouds' (Revelation 6:15-16, etc.)
  2. His arrival to Earth on a white horse for the battle against the Anti-Christ, False Prophet, and allied armies of the Earth (Revelation 19:11-21 ,etc.)
  3. His presence between these two events

Revelation Chronology: Overall Outline

You will find no attempt on this page to 'date set' any of the events described in the book of Revelation, since I find those efforts to be silly (at best) and dangerous (at worst).  However, I am interested to form a logical framework for understanding the chronological sequence of events (without dates) as they will occur -- noting that though the book is mostly chronological as written, it is not 100% sequential.  Many chapters appear to 'review' in greater detail events that had already been mentioned.

In this attempted chronological outline of Revelation, I have color-coded the cells/chapters which are clear to me are in chronological order i.e. events/periods following one another back-to-back (GREEN).  Other cells/chapters describe longer time frames (i.e. 3.5 years) and overlap with the previous ones (BLUE).  The overall duration of Revelation 6 to 19 is 7 years i.e Daniel's 70th Week, the last half (3.5 years) beginning with the Great Tribulation. The half-way point is not clear, but probably occurs in Revelation 6 i.e. during the first six Seals -- perhaps the 5th Seal, since this is associated with martyrdom (those speculations are marked in RED).  According to the timeline explored above, the Second Coming of Christ and Rapture occur soon after the 6th Seal (those speculations are marked in GOLD).  After this begins The Day of the Lord (marked in BLACK).  The chronological duration/placement of the remaining cells is not clear, and are perhaps more parenthetical.

Revelation Chronology: Overview Chart

The clearest simple chart that I have found so far that makes sense to me is this one from The Pre-Wrath Tribune:

Daniel Chronology: Anti-Christ & 7 Year Link to Matthew

Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11-12

He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him...“His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation...“From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

My Comments: Anti-Christ involved in 7-year peace plan.  Broken after 3.5 years with end to temple sacrifices when the 'Abomination that causes Desolation' occurs.  Another 3.5+ years till the End.  NOTE: In order to understand that Daniel 12:11 is stating that the 1290 days follows both the 'end to sacrifice and offering' and 'abomination that causes desolation', you need to take into account the other parallel verses which clarify that point.

Matthew 24:15-26

“So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time.  “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.

My Comments: Christ confirms Daniel's prophecy, and that it will start the most terrible time period in Earth's history, when a false Messiah appears.

Ezekiel Chronology: Armegeddon Link to Revelation

Ezekiel 39:17-20

“Son of man, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Call out to every kind of bird and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.  You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.  At the sacrifice I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk.  At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign LORD.

Revelation 19:17-18

And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God,  so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”

My Comments: Ezekiel 39 and Revelation 19 appear to describe the same battle.  If so, that would imply that both are referring to the Armegeddon battle.  However, Ezekiel 38 might describe a separate event.  As well, despite the fact that Gog/Magog is mentioned in Ezekiel 39 and Revelation 20, they are apparently not the same battle -- the one in Revelation 20 occurring after the 1000 year reign of Christ (i.e. Millenium).
